Meet and greet with voters
ON day one as Queensland’s opposition leader-in-waiting, Campbell Newman kissed his first baby while pressing the flesh with voters in the Brisbane seat of Ashgrove.
For 75 minutes yesterday morning, Mr Newman led a large media pack through the shopping precinct of Ashgrove, the seat he aims to wrest off Labor’s Environment Minister Kate Jones.
Premier Anna Bligh is yet to call an early state election but the meet and greet had all the bells and whistles of a corny, staged campaign event, including a baby-kissing photo opportunity.
The reception was mostly warm, with many congratulating Mr Newman on what they said was his brave decision to run. Several people promised him their votes.
