Obesity to shorten life
THE nation’s bulging waistline could drag life expectancy back to levels seen a decade ago, the Australian Bureau of Statistics has confirmed.
The bureau released updated figures for life expectancy and other key social trends yesterday, in a report that acknowledged experts’ concern over the impact of rising obesity. The update says Australian males born between 2007 and 2009 should expect to live 79.3 y e a r s , whi l e f e mal e s should live to 83.9 years.
The r e p o r t not e d a broader trend towards less healthy lifestyles - particularly among the young, who could go on to have shorter lives than previous generations.
