NZ dope ban over­turned

A NEW Zealand triath­lete’s dop­ing ban has been over­turned af­ter a tri­bunal ac­cepted mor­phine in his sys­tem came from eat­ing poppy seed bread. In a case the New Zealand Sports Tri­bunal de­scribed as ‘‘ very un­usual’’, triath­lete Graham O’Grady suc­cess­fully ap­pealed against a ban im­posed when he failed a dop­ing test af­ter win­ning an event in Tau­ranga last Jan­uary. O’Grady said he had eaten poppy seed bread in the lead-up to the event and his body had metabolised it into mor­phine.
