Housing data due next week
ECONOMIC data releases will be thin on the ground in the coming week, but still warrant a close look. The data will mostly cover those parts of the economy not being driven hard by the mining boom, although the week will end with a reminder of the boom’s once-in-a-lifetime magnitude. First will be the Housing Industry Association’s estimate of February’s sales of new homes by big building firms. The latest figures have shown the number of sales edging up since a low in September, but still 8 per cent below the average of the past five years and more than 30 per cent lower than the average for the five years before that.
