CENTRALS started the 2011 Townsville and Districts Rugby League season with a 24-20 win over University last night.

The action continues today with Charters Towers hosti n g d e f e n d i n g p r e mi e r s Brothers and Bindal Sharks meeting Burdekin at Shark Park.

A two-week delay due to wet weather has failed to place a dampener on the season start, with all teams fit and firing for the year ahead.

This season also features t h e i n a u g u r a l T D R L women’s competition and a new club in Norths joining the senior ranks in reserve grade and under-18s.

Many eyes will be on last year’s fifth-placed team University after a string of offseason signings including former NRL star George G a t i s a n d e x - B r i s b a n e Broncos NYC player Ryan Madsen.

Centrals have pulled off a recruitment boon by adding former Sunshine Coast captain and club junior Cameron Joyce to their ranks.

Joyce joins former Burdek i n R o o s t e r C h i p p i e Korostchuk among new faces in a squad captained by former Australian Schoolboys r e p r e s e n t a t i v e W a l l a c e Solomona.

Burdekin have also been active in the player market, some handy acquisitions in Shaun Casey, Shaun Ashwell and Tremayne Bowie should see the premiers remain a force. Charters Towers and Sharks have also been relatively quiet on the recruitment front and head into the s e a s o n wit h l a r g e l y unchanged squads.
