FORECAST wet weather failed to stop some of the world’s best free style motocross riders getting off the ground in Townsville at the weekend.
Extreme sports fans were hanging on the edge of their seats as the Nitro Circus dropped in on Saturday.
More than 15,000 North Queenslanders packed into Dairy Farmers Stadium to witness the world-renowned travelling road show.
Leading the star-studded tour was 17-time X Games medallist and motocross maestro Travis Pastrana during his first visit to regional Queensland.
Long - time friend and motocross champion Andy Bell said Townsville stood as the best show on the road.
‘‘ The crowd was just so receptive so it makes everybody want to pull off some big moves,’’ he said.
‘‘ The guys get so pumped they get out there they just get out there and go for it, so those sort of shows tend to provide the best entertainment.’’
Local adrenaline-charged s pectators witnessed an Australian first with Dusty Wygle pulling off a nailbiting move titled the TP Roll on his BMX after a series of unsuccessful attempts across the international tour.
Fellow rider Andy Buck- worth followed shortly after pulling off a double front flip over a 20m gap with no hands for one of the first times in Australia. Wygle said the vocal crowd pushed the riders to their limits.
‘‘ That was easily the most vocal crowd we have had on this tour so the guys were pumped up to show what they got,’’ he said.
‘‘ I have been trying to land the TP Roll for a while now so to finally pull it off has been a big weight off my shoulders.’’
The show went on without delay after overcast conditions failed to produce forecast falls.
Wygle said the crew enjoyed their first taste of the tropics.
‘‘ The tour has taken in the capital cities in the past but not the smaller towns so everybody has been very happy to see some new areas,’’ he said. ‘‘ It was a bit humid on Friday when we first got into town but the weather was perfect on the night of the show.’’
Originating in the United States, the show is based on a reality TV series on MTV.
