North says no- can- do
NORTH Queensland leaders fear daylight savings will be introduced in the region if Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman is granted control of the state.
Cr Newman has been a vocal advocate for daylight saving in south-east Queensland during his time at the helm in the state capital.
Daylight savings ceased to continue in Queensland after it was trialled in 1971 and again from 1989 to 1991.
Local leaders have warned against a move to introduce daylight saving in the North citing climate differences as the leading factor.
Member for Thuringowa Craig Wallace fears the issue could be back on the agenda.
‘‘ The Lord Mayor of Brisbane has said before, he wants a referendum on daylight savings. So my worry is they will use their numbers in Brisbane and south-east Queensland to force it on Townsville,’’ Mr Wallace said.
‘ ‘ North Queensland has been through daylight savings and it doesn’t work in our area.
