Be sensible on water for safe boating

Townsville Bulletin - - Voice Of The North - ROLY DAVIS, Wulguru

IN reply to Dale Parker and his ‘‘ bright idea’’ for boaties.

Dale, while I am pleased that you have taken an interest in boating safety, your idea is not so bright.

There are enough rules/ laws in place already.

The big problem is getting people to use some commonsense as in do not go out in adverse weather, use clean fuel, and ensure you have enough for the trip plus, make sure you have all the safety gear, and on and on etc.

Most of all, make sure you tell someone where you are going and your ETA back.

In my opinion, it should be made compulsory by Marine Safety Qld for ALL boaties to file trip sheets, and if they do not, throw the proverbial book at them.

The local Coast Guard already has full details of associate members on the computer and accepts trip sheets from non-members but the biggest problem seems to be that most boaties do not lodge trip sheets, and most likely do not tell anyone else where they are going or when they are returning.

There are many more factors involved that I am not at liberty to comment on but to all you boaties/ fishos out there, for everyone’s sake, including your family’s, if you go out in your vessel, file a trip sheet either before you go, or by phone, or radio. Happy boating.
