Two quakes hits NZ in one day

A SHAL­LOW mag­ni­tude 4.1 quake has shaken Ao­raki Mt Cook in New Zealand’s south is­land yes­ter­day shortly be­fore mid­day.

GNS Science said the 5km deep quake struck 20km north­east of Mt Cook at 11.54am lo­cal time.

It was felt in Fox Glacier and as far as Christchurch. The quake fol­lowed a mag­ni­tude 4.5 quake that hit New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty just hours ear­lier.

The quake struck just af­ter 5am, lo­cal time, and was cen­tred 70km north-east of Whakatane at a depth of 130km.
