Red Cross calling for volunteers

Townsville Bulletin - - PRIME TIME -

RED Cross is urgently calling on North Queenslanders to train as emergency services volunteers.

Red Cross is running a comprehensive, one-day training session in Townsville on April 2, to train people to help in their local communities when disaster strikes.

Emergency Services manager for Queensland, Carolyn Parsons says providing personal support during emergencies and managing evacuation centres were two of the most important services provided by Red Cross in Queensland during emergencies.

‘‘ Emergencies can strike at any time and it’s important for Red Cross to have trained volunteers on hand to support the community," Ms Parsons said. ‘‘ To ensure our support services are delivered safely, consistently and effectively, it is essential that volunteers are registered, trained and organised prior to an emergency event.’’

The training sessions will help participants know what to expect in an emergency, the role of Red Cross and how to support people who have been affected.
