Book lovers get together
THE word is out as book club members share the latest publications with fellow devotees.
Organiser of the Townsville Port Readers Book Club Karen Desira said the club was a diverse group of people of all ages who met once a month to review a chosen book.
Ms Desira said members contributed to choosing books and took turns in leading the discussion.
‘‘ Our meetings are held at 7pm on the first Monday of each month in the garden of the Victoria Park Hotel in South Townsville," she said.
‘‘ We read across a range of genres such as historical fiction, autobiography, rep o r t a g e , c r e a t i v e n o n - fiction, magical realism, science fiction, romance and short stories.
‘‘ Generally we source our books from the Townsville City Library Book Club Collection however we also choose titles outside this list."
Ms Desira said there was no charge to participate in the book club and that new members were always welcome.
She said the club currently had a membership of about 12 with six to eight in attendance at each meeting. C l u b m e m b e r K a r e n H a u s e r s a i d t h e facilitator’s role was to prepare questions regarding the book for that month a n d t o m o d e r a t e d i s - cussion.
‘‘ We like to have a good vibrant discussion about the books that we read but we’re not a literature class and I think we all find the social interaction to be an important part of why we get together every month," Ms Hauser said.
She said she was motivated to join the club so as to have some deadlines in her reading.
‘‘ What I get out of it is that I have a regular dose of fiction, a regular step-away from my everyday life," Ms Hauser said.
Books f or f uture discussion include: The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak; Tomorrow When the War Began by John Marsden; Atonement by Ian McEwan and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
