Salvos fired up in defence drug claim

Townsville Bulletin - - Voice Of The North -

1. ADF is a reflection of wider society. There are some sections of the ADF with a drinking culture, which is no different from wider society. Not everyone is a wanton pisshead however, just like wider society. 2. Drug and alcohol testing is random, regular and strict. This probably exceeds wider society. 3. If sensible but nonetheless restricted use of alcohol was endorsed in operational theatres many of the repressed issues that lead to medicinal drinking may well be averted. If some of this is a social/ bonding problem, a soldier is not going to make a break from their ‘‘ group’’ to seek help and then be on the outer with their comrades, especially the younger ones out for good times when not on duty. Isolated or loner soldiers may seek help but the problem includes groups. Posted by: Peg Asus of Townsville
