BHP mine to proceed
BHP Billiton Ltd says the planning for the expansion of its Olympic Dam gold, copper and uranium mine in South Australia has proceeded to the feasibility stage. The mining giant proposes to expand the mine’s copper production from about 180,000 tonnes a year now to 750,000 tonnes a year over the next 30 years. The expansion involves the development of a new open-pit copper mine, which will also produce gold and uranium byproducts. The company received more than 4000 public submissions to its draft environmental impact statement.
