An unexpected sale lead to the trip of a lifetime, writes Jade Kennedy
For Cloncurry girls Dee Salvahan and Sel Charol, both 27, a web sale led to the holiday of a lifetime. ‘‘ We saw a sale on V Australia for cheap airfares, so we just booked them,’’ Dee said.
‘‘ It was $ 1000 return between Brisbane and LA, which we thought was a pretty good deal.’’
‘‘ It was all done very last-minute,’’ Sel added.
‘‘ We saw the sale, booked the flights and there were about four months between then and when we left.
‘‘ Most of that time was spent booking tickets to shows and tourist attractions, so all of that was paid for before we actually left.’’
The girls’ holiday lasted nearly three weeks, in which time they took in the sights of LA, Las Vegas and. . . Virginia? ‘‘ We spent a week with friends in Virginia,’’ Sel said. ‘‘ It’s a bit out of the way – around a five-hour flight from the West Coast and there wasn’t much to do there, but we were there for my birthday so I got to spend that with people I don’t get to see much.’’
‘‘ The absolute highlight of the trip was the Grand Canyon,’’ Dee said.
‘‘ It’s amazing, you just can’t understand until you see it for yourself.’’
The girls said they did all of the usual touristy things, taking in Hollywood, Universal Studios and Disneyland.
‘‘ Disneyland was so much fun,’’ Dee said.
‘‘ It was funny seeing all these tourists going on the scary rides not understanding what was going on and getting scared witless.’’
Despite spending so much time in Los Angeles, Dee and Sel said their first celebrity sighting was on their way back to Australia.
‘‘ On the way back at LA we were in line for the security and bag scanning when we saw Brendan Fraser,’’ Dee said.
‘‘ He’s not as goodlooking in real life.’’
‘‘ He’s not as tall as I’d thought, either, ’’ Sel added.
