Centre needs swag of cash

Townsville Bulletin - - NEWS -

A RECOVERY fund is being set up to help rebuild an outback Queensland tourist centre dedicated to Australia’s most famous song after it was destroyed by fire.

Insurance will not cover the entire cost of rebuilding the Waltzing Matilda Centre at Winton, so local authorities are seeking donations.

Winton mayor Butch Lenton said $ 15- 18 million was needed for the project. “The maximum insurance payout is $ 12 million,” he said.

Mr Lenton said he would also ask state and federal governments for assistance. It has been two weeks since a fierce fire gutted the centre, and destroyed almost everything, including historic artefacts.
