Cop’s lucky es­cape af­ter car smash

A PO­LICE of­fi­cer es­caped with mi­nor in­juries af­ter a car crashed into his ve­hi­cle in Heat­ley yesterday.

The Townsville Dog Squad se­nior con­sta­ble was re­spond­ing to a break and en­ter in Cur­ra­jong when a car smashed into the side of the po­lice ve­hi­cle at the Duck­worth St and Dal­rym­ple Rd in­ter­sec­tion.

The male of­fi­cer was trav­el­ling with lights and sirens on and a po­lice dog in­side the car.

Dis­trict Duty Of­fi­cer Se­nior Sergeant Matt Lyons said the of­fi­cer was sent to Townsville Hos­pi­tal with mi­nor in­juries and the dog was not harmed.

The driver of the other ve­hi­cle, 76, and the pas­sen­ger, 72, also es­caped se­ri­ous in­jury.

Mean­while, Sen- Sgt Lyons said a back- up po­lice crew caught the male of­fender, who at­tempted to bur­gle the Cur­ra­jong prop­erty.

The man fled on foot with no be­long­ings af­ter a res­i­dent caught him in­side their home.

The man will ap­pear in Townsville Mag­is­trates Court to­day.
