FROM TREASURE TO FILTHY TRASH

Townsville Bulletin - - NEWS - CHRIS MCMAHON JANE ARMITSTEAD

THE jewel in Townsville’s crown has been left filthy and unkempt with litter strewn across the ground around the Jezzine Boardwalk.

The $ 40 million popular tourist walk and international award winner has become a dumping ground with garbage carelessly thrown from the walkway creating an eyesore amid pristine ocean views.

Mayor Jenny Hill said steep terrain made it hard for council workers to clean up the filth.

“Council is removing rubbish from down below Jezzine but some of it is in steep areas which may require someone to abseil down to clean it up,” Cr Hill said yesterday.

“The council allocates almost $ 750,000 a year to keep the city clean of rubbish. That includes regular litter patrols of the city approaches, cleaning of parks and public areas.”

Cr Hill said the careless littering reflected poorly on the city’s image, as well as putting added costs on the community.

“There is absolutely no excuse to leave rubbish lying around anywhere, let alone our prime attractions like The Strand, Jezzine and Riverway.”

Townsville Enterprise chief executive Patricia O’Callaghan said it was vital attractions were kept tidy, especially during peak tourism periods.

“We know how proud North Queenslanders are of The Strand and Jezzine Barracks but with that pride, we have to take responsibility,” she said.

“The onus is on everybody to look after those assets and educate our children and the younger generations.” Ms O’Callaghan said more security cameras were an option to catch out litterbugs but prevention was a better solution.

“Overall, we do a good job of looking after the place and it’s times like these in peak periods, when our visitors are here, that these things ( littering) tend to happen,” she said.

The boardwalk isn’t the only location around the region looking like a garbage dump, with Bulletin columnist Colin Dwyer calling out litterbugs dumping rubbish around The Strand and Castle Hill in his column yesterday.

Mr Dwyer noticed all sorts of rubbish in our most popular tourist attractions.
