RORY McIl­roy will know by Sun Sun­day if his dream of de­fend de­fend­ing his Open ti­tle at St A An­drews has been ended by a freak in­jury.

The world No. 1 suf­fer suf­fered se­ri­ous lig­a­ment dama dam­age af­ter turn­ing his an­kle while run­ning for a ball p play­ing five- a- side footb football with friends at home in North­ern Ire­land. McIlr McIl­roy will have in­ten in­ten­sive treat­ment this week in a bid to be fit.

“H He’s des­per­ate to play next week and do­ing ever ev­ery­thing he can in term terms of ic­ing it, hav­ing trea treat­ment and tak­ing anti anti- in­flam­ma­to­ries,” his man man­ager Sean O’Fla­herty said said. “This type of in­jury tak takes be­tween one week and six weeks to heal, so ... w we should know one wa way or the other by the en end of the week.”
