THERE are a multitude of roast chicken recipes and every one deserves a fantastic chardonnay. Pour these beside your favourite chicken dinner with all the trimmings and you’ll enjoy a loved- up marriage.
Lower Murray/ Adelaide Hills
Roast chicken and chorizo As a bargain basement chardonnay you get more tropical notes here from its clever blending of warmer climate and cooler regional sources. The latter adds lime zing for a lift to what otherwise is an unusual riper heady style. It’s more in a fruit salad mode than citrus driven, and is an everyday opportunity. Coonawarra
Sticky Cantonese roast chicken A nice little chardonnay that shines a light on the Coonawarra’s capacity to turn it on, here with delicately sweet white stone fruits with a dash of tropical and floral lift. In theory it should be richer with such ripe flavours but there’s a refreshing undercarriage of natural acidity that offsets the palate and expresses a sweeter lemon sherbet note. Good drinking at this price, though ultra- serious chardonnay geeks may need convincing. Frankland River, WA
Roast chicken with orange and ginger The term “Old School” gives us some idea where this is headed — again with fuller fruits and a note of the toasty butter and honeycaramel that can occur after oak maturation if the grapes reach a certain ripeness. Yet this is made compassionately with a no- frills kind of approach, making it mouthfilling and generous.
