Baird, Almond in duel to death
PORSCHE Carrera Cup drivers Craig Baird and Michael Almond traded top spots in the division’s two practice sessions yesterday.
There was little separating the two rivals with Baird taking out the first session with a lap time of 1.15.2582, marginally ahead of Almond’s fastest time of 1.15.2672. Nick McBride has put together a solid start to the Porsche Carrera Cup season to sit at second place in the drivers championship and the Victorian drove well to claim third in the first practice session.
Almond was able to turn the tables on Baird in the afternoon, with the fastest lap of the day to top the standings in the second practice. His time of 1.14.6189 helped him edge out Baird ( 1.14.6533) while Nick Foster rebounded to finish in third ( 1.14.7910).
Series leader and former V8 Supercars star Steven Richards will be looking to improve on his times today after finishing eighth and ninth in the two warm- ups.
Just 0.9 of a second separated the top 13 in yesterday’s final practice session and competition will be fierce at today’s qualifying ahead of the first of the weekend’s three 20- lap races at 3pm today.
