Jaws drop as bike stuntman lights up

Townsville Bulletin - - NEWS - JANE ARMITSTEAD

HOMEGROWN daredevil Matt Mingay returned to the North to do what he does best: be the centre of attention.

The Townsville- born stuntman, 38, and Australia’s top action sports athlete tore it up on the track over the three- day event entertaining crowds with his gravity- defying tricks.

Mingay dropped jaws with his signature trick of riding a Harley- Davidson that breathes fire. He’s the only Australian stuntman to pull off the stunt.

“I was brought up being the centre of attention and here I am many years later still being the centre of attention,” he laughed.

“It’s about burning rubber, making noise and fire.”

Mingay, who is based on the Gold Coast, continued to shock crowds when he debuted a stunt at the Townsville event with his giant 600- horsepower Hot Wheels Jump Truck.

He is the only Australian Streetbike stunt rider to break Guinness World Records and work on blockbuster films and commercials, including being the stunt double for Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible II.

But it’s all about crowds for Mingay.

“When we go out there, the crowd goes nuts for it and the crazier they go, the crazier we go,” he said.

“When the crowd starts to go wild, so do we.”
