AF­TER miss­ing out on backto- back ti­tles last year, the North Queens­land ladies are look­ing to bring the Bendigo Bank Shield back to Townsville.

Af­ter win­ning the shield in 2013, North Queens­land fin­ished run­ners- up in Tully last year in the an­nual five- team com­pe­ti­tion, which kicks off at Sub­ur­ban Bowls Club in Her­mit Park to­day.

They will be tak­ing on teams from Cairns, Mackay, Ather­ton Table­lands and Far North dis­tricts over four days.

“North Queens­land won the Bendigo Bank in 2013 and they came sec­ond in 2014 when it was played in Tully,” NQ Dis­trict Ladies Bowls As­so­ci­a­tion sec­re­tary Beres O’Keefe said.

“They should be up in the top teams this time and hope­fully they’ll take it out.”

The North Queens­land team is made up of play­ers from Bowen, Ing­ham, Ayr and Townsville clubs who were se­lected at tri­als ear­lier in the year.

The team have al­ready played to­gether and rep­re­sented North Queens­land at the state dis­tricts cham­pi­onships in Bris­bane in May, fin­ish­ing third in di­vi­sion two.

The tour­na­ment has been run­ning since 1974 and is one of the high­lights of the women’s bowl­ing cal­en­dar. The five dis­tricts share host­ing rights, with the tour­na­ment mov­ing to Mackay next year.
