VICTORY NORTH’S LADIES BANKING ON SHIELD
AFTER missing out on backto- back titles last year, the North Queensland ladies are looking to bring the Bendigo Bank Shield back to Townsville.
After winning the shield in 2013, North Queensland finished runners- up in Tully last year in the annual five- team competition, which kicks off at Suburban Bowls Club in Hermit Park today.
They will be taking on teams from Cairns, Mackay, Atherton Tablelands and Far North districts over four days.
“North Queensland won the Bendigo Bank in 2013 and they came second in 2014 when it was played in Tully,” NQ District Ladies Bowls Association secretary Beres O’Keefe said.
“They should be up in the top teams this time and hopefully they’ll take it out.”
The North Queensland team is made up of players from Bowen, Ingham, Ayr and Townsville clubs who were selected at trials earlier in the year.
The team have already played together and represented North Queensland at the state districts championships in Brisbane in May, finishing third in division two.
The tournament has been running since 1974 and is one of the highlights of the women’s bowling calendar. The five districts share hosting rights, with the tournament moving to Mackay next year.
