Hopes dim for missing woman, 52
GRAVE concerns are held for a woman missing in the Hinchinbrook Channel near Cardwell since Sunday.
The Melbourne woman, 52, is believed to have gone overboard from a houseboat she was on with her husband in Missionary Bay at the northern end of Hinchinbrook Island.
An air, sea and land search was launched after she was reported missing about 10am.
Innisfail Inspector Brian Cannon said police had examined the vessel, saying it was a “concerning situation”.
“We’ve spoken to the husband at some length, but we certainly aren’t holding him, he’s been able to provide us with sufficient background information to assist us with our inquiries,” he said.
Insp Cannon said the likelihood of finding the woman alive reduced each day.
“She’s missing in an open sea area … we would be hopeful she is alive, but as the days pass, they cause that hope to diminish exponentially,” he said.
Insp Cannon said the extensive search had involved water police, specialist divers, coast guard, a search and rescue management co- ordinator and wildlife officers.
