Pay­out for cop choke

THE fam­ily of a black man who died af­ter be­ing placed in a choke- hold by a white po­lice­man reached a $ US5.9 mil­lion ($ A8 mil­lion) set­tle­ment with New York City. Eric Garner’s fam­ily in Oc­to­ber filed a no­tice of claim, the first step in fil­ing a law­suit against the city, ask­ing for $ US75 mil­lion. Mr Garner’s death sparked demon­stra­tions and de­bate about re­la­tions be­tween po­lice and mi­nori­ties.
