O’Callaghan St, Heatley
Private John ( Jack) O’Callaghan, 24, died of enteritis while a prisoner of war in Angora, Turkey, January 21, 1917. A drover, warder and draper before the war, he took part in the Kennedy militia expedition to Thursday Island before joining the AIF in Townsville in December, 1914. He was captured while serving with the 9th Battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. The son of Mr and Mrs Crosby O’Callaghan, of North Ward, he was well known in western Queensland.
