O’Cal­laghan St, Heat­ley

Pri­vate John ( Jack) O’Cal­laghan, 24, died of en­teri­tis while a pris­oner of war in An­gora, Tur­key, Jan­uary 21, 1917. A drover, warder and draper be­fore the war, he took part in the Kennedy mili­tia ex­pe­di­tion to Thurs­day Is­land be­fore join­ing the AIF in Townsville in De­cem­ber, 1914. He was cap­tured while serv­ing with the 9th Bat­tal­ion at Gal­lipoli in June 1915. The son of Mr and Mrs Crosby O’Cal­laghan, of North Ward, he was well known in western Queens­land.
