Pilgrims stampede

Townsville Bulletin - - NEWS -

PILGRIMS at a Hindu bathing festival triggered a stampede on a river bank in southern India, killing 27 and injuring dozens. The stampede on the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh was triggered by pilgrims trying to retrieve their shoes, which had fallen off in the rush to the riverbank, police said. Participants believe a bath in the river can rid them of their sins, and many bathe on the first day of the 12- day festival.
