Suncorp eyes NRL deciders
NRL CHIEF executive Dave Smith has been involved in key meetings in Brisbane about a bid to bring an NRL grand final to Suncorp Stadium in 2020 or beyond.
“When we were finalising the long- term hiring arrangements with the Broncos earlier this year, the NRL, at Dave Smith level, was involved in the discussions,’’ said a spokesman for AEG Ogden, managers of Suncorp Stadium and other entertainment centres across Australia.
“We wanted an opportunity for Queensland to bid for future grand finals.
“Management of Suncorp Stadium raised the potential and our understanding is the NRL will consider putting it to tender leading up to the ( end of) current arrangements in 2019.’’
Smith said last September that grand finals could be played outside Sydney in future with tenders welcomed from other states. The only grand final played outside Sydney was the 1997 Super League decider, which was played in Brisbane during the code’s split season.
“Under the NRL’s contract with the NSW Government, the Telstra Premiership grand final will be played at ANZ Stadium until 2019,’’ an NRL spokesman said yesterday.
“Consideration of the grand final venue beyond 2019 will be made closer to that date.”
NSW paid $ 45 million for all of the grand finals between 2013- 19.
