Hockey for online GST

Townsville Bulletin - - NEWS -

ONLINE shoppers will be slugged GST on products under $ 1000 for the first time under a reinvented Abbott Government drive to boost revenue.

It is understood Treasurer Joe Hockey is “enthusiastically’’ implementing a plan to extend the GST to imported goods under $ 1000.

The plan was previously dismissed by the states after it was revealed it would cost too much to administer.

News Corp has been told that while Western Australia was the strongest proponent, its position has now softened after it received $ 500 million more this year in federal funding for roads.

In the past few days, Mr Hockey has been ramping up his rhetoric about the need to target online shopping.

The Government also believes the change could give another boost to small business.
