Metcash has appointed former Coles managing director Steven Cain to head its core IGA business, while Mark Hewlett has been recruited from Woolworths to lead the company’s search for new business.
Mr Cain, who previously worked for Asda in the UK, was brought in by the then Coles Myer to turn around its flagging supermarkets business in 2003 but abruptly left the position 14 months later, reportedly after clashes with staff.
He will join Metcash on August 1 and will have responsibility for IGA’s efforts to regain market share and lift profitability in the face of intense competition from Coles, Woolworths and Aldi.
Mr Hewlett worked for Aldi and Lidl in the UK before joining Woolworths to develop its convenience business.
He will start work Metcash on August 12.
