Froling shoots to reps spot

Townsville Bulletin - - SPORT - LIAM BUTTERWORTH

SAMSON Froling has shot his way into the Australian under- 17 representative team.

Like his father Shane and siblings Alicia, Keely and Harry, Samson will don the green and gold for a junior national team when he plays at the FIBA Oceania Championships in New Zealand in August.

Having been one of the standouts in the championship winning team at the Australian under- 16 nationals earlier this month, Froling was one of 16 players invited to trial for the national team at a selection camp in Canberra at the weekend.

He arrived back in Townsville late last night having achieved his goal.

The 15- year- old power forward is a bottom age player in the under- 17 division but still earned a spot in the side, which will attempt to qualify for the under- 17 world championships next year.

It caps a strong week for the Townsville basketball family.

Samson’s sister Alicia is in Russia helping the Australian Gems under- 19 team to an unbeaten start to their world championship campaign.

She bagged nine points and seven rebounds in the Gems’ 14- point win over Brazil on Sunday, while brother Harry flew out yesterday for the Adidas Nations tournament in the US.
