Poised to Pounce the one to beat
TONIGHT’S Townsville Greyhound Clubs meeting at the Showgrounds will feature a number of Townsville Cup hopefuls looking for form in a 498m race.
Poised to Pounce, Knights Templar and Blue Houdini are among the field that will race for some form over the cup distance to better their shot at the Group Three title in August.
Poised to Pounce for Glen Olsen should start the favourite.
Danger will come from newcomer to the showgrounds track Knights Templar for conditioner Rhonda Goodwin.
The question mark will be on whether Knights Templar and Listen can back up after a solid Cairns Cup campaign over recent weeks. Other racing this week at the showgrounds sees Helensvale trainer and regular visitor Norm Bradford with a small team of four runners in the program.
His best hope would appear to be Are Ate, a finalist from last year’s Townsville Cup despite the fact it’s out of form of late and only racing over the 380m distance.
Are Ate is a consistent performer which usually places at worst in any start. He won’t find it easy though with class sprinters Supermac and Eunice Lillian the main chances, although both drawn wide on Are Ate’s outside.
Over the weekend the running of the Cairns Cup final was won by Minglea Cosmo for Townsville trainer Robert Olsen.
After being the slowest qualifier from the heats, Minglea Cosmo raced away entering the home straight with Michael Hickmott’s Asa Extreme in second and Zambezi Rock for Michael Fusco in third. Other winners at the Cairns Cup Carnival included Elusive Diva for Hickmont winning the Irene Drury Maiden Final and Captain Lonestar for Robert Lound winning the Fishery Falls 4/ 5th Grade sprint final over 410 metres.
Gates open at 6.30pm ahead of the first race at 7.14pm, with entry via Kings Rd.
