Townsville Bulletin - - SPORT -

ROWERS from clubs across North Queensland took to Ross River on the weekend with the competition fierce at the annual Townsville and JCU Rowing Club Premiership Regatta.

Teams from Cairns, Mackay and Innisfail made the trip to take on athletes from host club Townsville and JCU ( TJCURC) and cross- town rivals the Riverway Rowing Club.

The two- day carnival drew a field of more than 120 rowers, with competitors ranging in age from teenagers in the junior divisions to masters competitors aged in their sixties.

There was fierce but friendly competition between the North Queensland clubs and it was Riverway who finished atop the medal tally after their men’s eight team edged out the host club by less than a second in the feature race.

TJCURC president Chloe Schauble said they had received great feedback from the event and that the regional regattas prided themselves on a friendly north Queensland atmosphere.

“It was a really well- run regatta, there were no hitches and all of the other club presidents had really nice stuff to say at the official presentations on Sunday,” she said.
