Leaders who have inspired

Townsville Bulletin - - FEATURE -

MULKADEE festival has been such a huge success thanks to some muchloved Mulkadee leaders who return each year with a new enthusiasm for transforming groups of students of various ages and skill levels into performance- ready ensembles.

Among these is David Lawrence who has a long association with the Mulkadee Youth Arts Festival and first became involved with Mulkadee back in 2007.

Based in the UK, David brings his incredible experience of working with mass choirs all over the world to the students of Mulkadee, right here in Townsville.

He will return this year to lead the Mulkadee Choir, delivering a range of pieces that will challenge students as they learn about the intricacies of performing in a mass choir of up to 400 voices.

As a highly experienced performer, David’s vibrant personality delights and engages the students and adds greatly to the entertainment factor of the Mulkadee concert.

Also returning is Peter Francis, who has been leading the Mulkadee Band since 2010, working with students and teachers to create both a junior and senior concert ensemble.

Peter’s vast experience is shared with students who enthusiastically learn through his unique and jolly style of teaching and engagement.

Much like his colleague David, Peter delivers an outstanding performance and interacts wonderfully with the audience, which adds to the entertainment of the culminating concert.

A relative newcomer to Mulkadee, Paul Svoboda joined the festival in 2013 to lead the newly introduce guitar workshop.

Having a very small group of students to work with, Paul’s gentle yet energising style of teaching led to the guitar ensemble growing significantly to become one of the most popular components of the Mulkadee concert.

Paul’s love of music, teaching and performing adds richly to the overall Mulkadee experience.

This year Sydney Dance Company has also been engaged to lead the dance program. As one of Australia’s leading contemporary dance companies and with sellout performances in Townsville last year, the Mulkadee program is set to experience a unique dance concept. Four dance experts will be leading students in the creation of a dance piece specifically for the Mulkadee Youth Arts Festival.

National Institute of Drama Art ( NIDA) has long been looked upon as Australia’s most prestigious performing arts agency. As a leader in the field, offering education and training in performing arts and the entertainment industry, NIDA has many success stories including Toni Collette, Mel Gibson, Cate Blanchett and Baz Luhrman, to name a few.

Sean Hall, Margaret Breen, Julian Curtis, Daniella Lacob and Jack Ellis will be working with drama students in this year’s Mulkadee program, bringing an incredible wealth of industry experience and delivering memorable creative experiences for those with a passion for the performing arts.
