Bespoke with the people

Townsville Bulletin - - OPINION -

ANYONE who has driven into the city from Railway Ave or Boundary St will have passed over the Tom Aikens overpass. So who was Tom Aikens?

He was the local member for Townsville South. What was his claim to fame? Apart from being a popular independent, he always used a pushbike to get around his electorate, at a time when other politicians were making the best of their parliamentary expenses and travel entitlements. He maintained that it allowed him to meet and discuss the issues with the voters.

It’s about time politicians of all parties respected the expenses and privileges they have. Some in the North would even benefit from a bit of a workout on the bike.
