Wearable art win an accident

WHEN Magnetic Island park ranger Tom Ralph was convinced to enter the World of Wearable Art design competition at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, he didn’t expect to win a trip to New Zealand.

The gallery ran the competition as part of its World of Wearable exhibition, with visi- tors creating their own minigarment on paper mannequins.

Mr Ralph’s design was picked as the best of more than 1000 entries, but he said he didn’t consider himself particularly creative.

“I came in to meet my girlfriend and a couple of her mates and they were at the table making the little mannequins and I had no intention of doing it but sat down and made one,” he said. “It was sort of what was left on the table.”

His paper creature was enough to win him a flight to New Zealand, accommodation and tickets to the World at Wearable Art award show in Wellington in September.

Judge Felicity Mountford said Mr Ralph’s piece had a sense of movement.
