New­born’s throat slit

THE mother of a six- week- old girl was last night be­ing in­ter­viewed by the homi­cide squad fol­low­ing re­ports she had slit her baby’s throat at their home in sub­ur­ban New­cas­tle.

Po­lice and am­bu­lance of­fi­cers found the in­fant dead when they ar­rived at the prop­erty in Wallsend shortly af­ter 9am yesterday af­ter re­ceiv­ing a call for help from another fam­ily mem­ber in­side.

Shortly af­ter, a group of dis­traught friends and rel­a­tives ar­rived at the home to news the new­born in­fant had died.

Sev­eral women in the group from the Su­danese com­mu­nity sat weep­ing in a park ad­ja­cent to the home, while a man com­forted a young girl out­side the rental prop­erty.

New­cas­tle po­lice said the baby’s 26- year- old mother had been ar­rested and was be­ing in­ter­viewed by de­tec­tives.
