Striking gold with duo a big hit on world stage
TOWNSVILLE taekwondo stars Nigel Paul and Krysti RosmalenBrinkley have returned from the Unified International Taekwondo Federation world championships covered in gold.
The pair won gold in individual and team events, with Paul winning a gold in the veteran men’s fourth- tosixth dan black belt patterns, and Rosmalen- Brinkley taking out the open ladies black belt second dan individual patterns.
They went on to win in the power breaking, special technique and patterns team events, earning Townsville a total of eight gold medals.
Rosmalen- Brinkley, 21, made her international debut at the recently held world championships, while Paul received a late call- up to captain Australia against 30 countries in a tournament featuring 570 competitors.
Australia’s previous team captain withdrew just prior to the Londonbased championships.
“I didn’t really expect too much success this time because I hadn’t been training as much as I had previously,” said Paul, who has won gold at past world championships.
“But I’ve been training with Krysti and just helping with preparations, so that came in handy. Krysti did exceptionally well and she had to get past about 15 competitors to get her gold, whereas I had about five, so she had a great tournament.”
Rosmalen- Brinkley won her individual gold by consistently overcoming her opponents by performing the most difficult second dan patterns – “juche” – with precision and poise.
She has since returned to North Queensland and gone on placement for her medical studies.
“Krysti was a bit nervous at the start and it could have been won or lost there, but she found her mark and never looked back,” Paul said.
The Authentic taekwondo athletes will need to make space in their club’s trophy cabinet, which features 11 gold medals from the 2013 UTIF championships. Their success comes after clubmate Maria Patane won gold and silver at the recent Open World ITF titles in Rimini, Italy.
