Blumenthal gives chef Billie her just desserts
BALLINA restaurant manager Billie McKay was last night crowned this year’s MasterChef and in the process earned a new job working for top chef Heston Blumenthal.
In a nailbiting Channel 10 TV finale which saw Queensland rival Georgia Barnes win two out of the three challenges, McKay came from four points behind in the final round to perfectly execute a monumental dessert from Blumenthal, who was so impressed he hired her on the spot for his famed UK restaurant, The Fat Duck.
“I don’t know what is better, winning MasterChef or this job, it’s such a cool thing to come out of it,” McKay, 23, said.
To win the cooking reality series, the final challenge last night involved cooking a 55step, 17- element dessert.
McKay won a cash prize of $ 250,000, an Alpha Romeo and a monthly column with Delicious magazine.
