Speedsters put lives at risk around city square

Townsville Bulletin - - OPINION -

I WOULD like to comment on Townsville Bulletin Square which is a fabulous attribute to our city centre. Unfortunately I do see it as a “fatality” waiting to happen.

In particular the shared zone with Ogden St. This area blends in beautifully, looks nothing like a roadway and where vehicular traffic passes through the speed is supposed to be limited to 10km/ h. Unfortunately vehicles constantly and blatantly speed through this area doing 50- 60km/ h.

We have had enough deaths on the roads in recent days including a child being run over in a caravan park in Cairns. Can our police ( who are doing a great job in monitoring school zones) allocate some time to this precinct to ensure the safety of all, but particularly our young children who head to the fountain in front of this traffic?

Perhaps the Townsville City Council could look at installing some traffic calming. I live close by and frequent the area often and can only foresee Townsville Bulletin Square in the news for all the wrong reasons.

COLIN OBERLE,

Townsville City.

Should Townsville give up one of its Cowboys games for Cairns?

DANGER: Fast cars are a threat to children heading to the fountain on Ogden Street, says a reader.
