Cobalt ban for Rocky trainer

Townsville Bulletin - - SPORT -

ROCKHAMPTON trainer Jamie McConachy has been slapped with an 18- month ban after his stable star Vandalised produced a positive sample to cobalt after winning last year’s Rockhampton Cup.

McConachy, 55, said the ban could spell the end of his long career in the sport and yesterday vowed to appeal the decision.

The ban comes into effect from Saturday midnight but McConachy plans to request a stay of proceedings until his appeal is heard.

McConachy, who has trained on and off in Queensland since he was 18, claims he didn’t know what cobalt was before told of Vandalised’s positive test in the Rockhampton Cup on June 21 last year.

RQ stewards charged McConachy last week with presenting Vandalised to race in the 2014 Rockhampton Cup with a prohibited substance in his system.
