Umps go overboard

Townsville Bulletin - - SPORT -

THE AFL has admitted Round 17 was over-officiated, with umpiring boss Wayne Campbell adamant umpires were instructed to find only “two or three” extra free kicks.

Players, coaches and fans were left enraged after the umpires dished out the highest average number of free kicks for a round this season – a result of “some sort of miscommunication”, Campbell said. He said the only directive to umpires was to find a few previously missed free kicks around marking contests, 50m penalties and pushes in the back but they went overboard at the weekend.
