Stupidity driving up road toll

Townsville Bulletin - - OPINION -

IT was sad to read in the Bulletin about further deaths on the highway between Townsville and Mackay.

My wife and I have travelled this route on many occasions over the last three years while our daughter was studying in Mackay. Yes, the roads may need upgrading and repairing in some areas, however, on each trip we were amazed with the risks drivers had taken on overtaking other vehicles, not just one vehicle but four or five in a row nearing a blind corner.

We were amazed with the stupidity that some drivers had shown through impatience, and on several occasions we witnessed some near misses on possible head- on collisions.

Unfortunately, there are areas where you will travel some distance without any overtaking lanes being available.

Unfortunately, stupidity will occur everywhere.

The other day I witnessed while walking down Fulham Rd in Townsville a vehicle travelling between 50- 60km/ h being overtaken by one vehicle on the inside and another vehicle on the outside.

We could have the best roads, however, we will still have accidents resulting in loss of precious lives because many drivers take risks without thinking of the consequences.

JOSEPH WALKER,

Gulliver.
