Sharp rise in tourism

AUS­TRALIA has en­joyed a surge in in­ter­na­tional visi­tor num­bers, with Tas­ma­nia lead­ing the na­tion. In­ter­na­tional visi­tor num­bers were up 8 per cent across the coun­try to 6.5 mil­lion in the 12 months to March, fig­ures re­leased by the fed­eral gov­ern­ment show. And tourists spent more than $ 32 bil­lion, a new record and a 10 per cent in­crease on the pre­vi­ous year. The Austrade data, re­leased yesterday, shows an in­crease in visi­tors from China, the US, New Zealand, Sin­ga­pore and In­dia. Tas­ma­nia recorded a 28 per cent in­crease in in­ter­na­tional visi­tors.
