Another turtle ‘ oiled’

Townsville Bulletin - - NEWS - CHRISTIE ANDERSON

A SECOND turtle has been found covered in oil off the North Queensland coast as authorities plan to reopen beaches affected by the spill today.

The Flatback Turtle was found alive at Forrest Beach and has been taken to Townsville for treatment.

An examination of another oil- covered Flatpack Turtle has ruled out oil as the cause of the animals’s death with no oil found in its lungs or gut.

Authorities are planning to reopen beaches today as the clean up nears it end. Crews will remain at affected beaches over the weekend.

Queensland Health has warned beachgoers to steer clean of any oil as it could pose a health risk.

An 800m oil spill about 10 nautical miles off Cape Upstart was reported to Townsville’s Coast Guard about 7am on July 17, prompting a massive clean- up.

Samples were still being taken from ships yesterday with hopes a positive match will be found.
