A TOP US military officer has thrown his support behind Townsville’s celebrations to mark the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific.

Lieutenant General John Dolan, who recently assumed command of US Forces Japan and Fifth Air Force, will join the celebrations on August 14- 16, bringing with him the USAF Band of the Pacific- Asia region, which will join Townsville’s 1RAR band at a community concert on August 15.

The Fifth Air Force will also provide a B- 52 for a flyover after the parade.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said VP70 was shaping up to be a great national event with more than 200 veterans signed up to celebrate the end of World War II.

Cr Hill said Lt Gen Dolan’s attendance signalled the sig- nificance with which the US air force placed upon this year’s commemorations.

“Townsville was home to the 5th American Airforce during the height of battle when thousands of troops were stationed here,” Cr Hill said.

“Our city was the most important allied military and air base in the north of Australia.

“The impact of 5th Air Force was recognised with a dedicated memorial at Kissing Point featuring the US flag.”

Lt Gen John Dolan.
