THERE is no secret to Matt Scott’s success in the NRL over the years other than being an absolute professional who works super hard.
It’s a special milestone he will achieve tomorrow when he plays his 200th game for the North Queensland Cowboys, just the fifth player in the club’s 20- year- history to do so.
In my opinion, ‘ Thumper’ is the best prop to pull on a Cowboys jersey, and has been one of the competition’s best front- rowers for so long.
Some players come in and out of form, but Matt Scott is a guy who has achieved most players’ ultimate goal – playing consistent football at a high level for as long as you can.
It all comes down to how professional he is and he takes great care of himself. He is always careful with what he eats and he’s one of the most flexible people I’ve ever seen for how big he is, probably even one of the most flexible at the club.
He’s always ready for training and he’s a real leader within our group, and I know it’s not just the young front rowers who look up to him.
One aspect of tomorrow’s match against the Raiders that has flown under the radar is that it’s also a milestone game for Lachlan Coote, who is playing his 100th NRL game.
Cootey has only played 16 games for the Cowboys, having played 83 games for the Penrith Panthers before moving up here.
He probably could have reached this milestone two or three years ago if it wasn’t for the horror run of injuries he’s had in his career, including his knee injury last year playing for the Cowboys at the Auckland Nines. It’s awesome he’s been able to come back from that and he’s probably in career best form.
He could have lost a lot of interest but he trained extremely hard last year.
It’s shown this year with how fit he came back and it didn’t look like he had been out of the game for 12 months.
Aside from the milestones, the game is also a chance to get into the superhero theme as we will be wearing our Thor jerseys. It’s a great idea because it really gets the kids involved.
It would be great to see people come to the game dressed as their favourite superhero and really get into the atmosphere of it.
