CLUDEN’S TEARY MEMORIAL

Townsville Bulletin - - NEWS -

EMOTIONAL scenes at the Cluden races on Thursday when the racing industry paid tribute to former Townsville jockey Donna Philpot, who died in a track accident in Bendigo this week.

Donna, nee Smith, was a trailblazer for women jockeys in the north and along with former jockey husband Gus, was much loved and respected. The Philpots, with daughters Jessie and Montana, relocated to Victoria a few years back and are highly regarded in the racing industry around Bendigo.

Donna was killed after the horse she was riding in a jump- out fell. Thursday’s tribute was one of the few times the Cluden course has come to a sudden stop for a minute’s silence. You could hear a pin drop.

Everyone stood. Jockeys wore black armbands and gathered in a close circle in the saddling enclosure to remember a fallen comrade and great personal friend whose life was cut much too short at 47.
