Marathon promises real battle
FORGET Jeff Horn and Manny Pacquiao, tomorrow’s biggest clash could be fought out on the streets of the Gold Coast in the early hours of the morning.
Long before the pugilistic pair meet to contest the WBO welterweight crown at Suncorp Stadium tomorrow afternoon, two of the best marathoners ever seen in Australia will go head- to- head on the Gold Coast for the country’s most prestigious marathon crown.
Great competitors Yuki Kawauchi and Kenneth Mungara are set to renew their Gold Coast Marathon rivalry after being separated by just one second at the finish line last year.
Mungara took the honours to claim his second- consecutive title in one of the most exciting finishes seen in Australia since Robert de Castella held off Tanzanian Juma Ikanga to take gold in the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane.
And the Kenyan barber hopes he can snare a third crown tomorrow, aiming for a 2hr 8min run.
Mungara holds the Australian all- comers marathon record with his winning time from 2015 of 2: 08.42.
