Fu­ture on dis­play as lit­tle stars hit pitch

AC­TION is un­der way at the Filippo Mele Memo­rial Car­ni­val, and not even the week­end’s gloomy weather could put a damp­ener on all the fun.

More than 450 play­ers from across North Queens­land have de­scended on Brolga Park for the an­nual ju­nior foot­ball spec­tac­u­lar, which fea­tures both boys and girls di­vi­sions from un­der- 9s to un­der- 13/ 14.

Pro­ceed­ings were launched with an of­fi­cial open­ing cer­e­mony on Satur­day and first games kicked off soon af­ter, with the ac­tion con­tin­u­ing to­day and run­ning through un­til Wed­nes­day.

Townsville is rep­re­sented in all age groups, and teams from re­gions in­clud­ing Cairns, John­stone River, Mackay and the Bur­dekin are also tak­ing part.

A four- team competition run by the Townsville Mul­ti­cul­tural Sup­port Group is be­ing held in con­junc­tion with the five- day ju­nior car­ni­val.

Play re­sumes this morn­ing at Brolga Park from 8am.
