CENTRE STAGE MORGAN SET F OR STARTING ROLE
MICHAEL Morgan could be named at centre for the first time since his Queensland Cup days with Maroons coach Kevin Walters still deciding whether to thrust the Cowboys star or debutant Cameron Munster at five- eighth for Wednesday week’s Origin decider.
Morgan ( pictured) has played all seven of his Origins off the bench but he will start for the first time in the Suncorp Stadium blockbuster after Walters confirmed Ben Hunt will play the interchange utility role in his Maroons debut.
Fellow Cowboys Gavin Cooper and Coen Hess were also named for their third and second Origin appearances respectively. Johnathan Thurston’s season- ending shoulder injury has left the No. 6 jersey up for grabs and Morgan has a strong case after being a fixture with Queensland since 2015.
He followed a strong Origin II display with two man- of- the- match performances for the Cowboys in wins against Penrith and Canberra. Morgan hasn’t played centre since he helped guide the Mackay Cutters to a Queensland Cup grand final win over Easts Tigers in 2013, scoring a crucial late try.
He played right centre when Will Chambers was forced off with concussion in Origin II, and set up Dane Gagai’s winning try with a brilliant flick pass.
